A Legacy of Learning and Resilience

The Johnson Public Library, located in Johnson, Vermont, has been serving the community since its establishment in 1895. Initially founded with a modest collection, including donations from the state and local citizens, the library has grown to house approximately 9,575 volumes and circulates over 15,000 items annually.

From a single room in 1895 to a thriving community hub — our story continues

audiobooks, videos, and magazines for all age groups. Additionally, it provides public access to computers, high-speed internet, and printing services. Following multiple instances of flood damage, the library was awarded a grant in October 2024 to relocate to a safer location. The library remains committed to serving both residents and visitors of Johnson.

Built by the Community,
Rooted in Service

Since its earliest days, the Johnson Public Library has been shaped by the dedication and vision of the local community. In 1899, a group of women known as the Oread Club organized around a shared mission: “mental improvement, social union, and organized effort toward encouraging a more generous public spirit.” Despite lacking the right to vote at the time, these women led the charge to establish a permanent library. By 1909, their efforts—fueled by generous donations and tireless fundraising—culminated in the construction of the beloved brick library on Railroad Street, where it would remain for more than a century.

The Library's story has been marked by both triumph and challenge. It has weathered multiple floods, including the devastating flood of 1927 that destroyed its entire collection. Remarkably, the community responded with overwhelming generosity, donating enough books to more than double what had been lost. More recently, repeated flooding—including a major event in 2023—prompted the decision to relocate the building for the first time in over a hundred years. Through every chapter, one thing has remained constant: the Library’s role as a cultural and educational anchor in Johnson, powered by community spirit and resilience.
